Changes and Choices
"This is My Story"
Subject: Language Arts
Concept/Skill: Writing, visual representation
Time Frame: 50 minutes

Goal/Objective:
  • CC.6.R.I.7- Integration of Knowledge and Ideas: Integrate information presented in different media or formats as well as in words to develop a coherent understanding of a topic or issue.
  • CC.6.W.3- Text Types and Purposes: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences.
Rationale: Student will create a graphic cartoon of a real life experience where they faced a change or conflict and overcame it. This will allow students to reflect upon themselves and the change that has occured in their life during this period of maturity.
Materials: handout, pencil, colored pencils,
Activity: Student will be given a handout that contains six boxes on it where they will construct a visual representation of a change or conflict they have experienced in the life recently. It can be about physical changes, emotional changes, etc. With the handout, they will have class time to draw their story out and color it, and also provide a written explanation with each picture about what it represents and what they were feeling while going through their change or dealing with a conflict. Once students complete their project, they will have the opportunity to share with the class what their pictures represent. The teacher may check for understanding by asking:
  • "What was happening in your life that led to this change? How did you decide to handle the situation?"
  • "When someone finds themselves in a conflict, what are a couple ways they can resolve the situation? For example, if you are having a misunderstanding with a sibling, how should you go about resolving your dispute? Or what if you care being bullied at school?"
Closure: Discuss how everyone's changes relate to the time in their life when change is normal and healthy. Have students discuss why they believe these changes are happening to them now and why. Encourage students to talk to one another about their story and give insight or feedback.
Assessment:
Student: Students will be graded on their participation, understanding of the project, and completing it neatly using creativity.
Teacher:
  • Were all students engaged in the project and comfortable with sharing?
  • Did all students comprehend the lesson and make connections to one anothers lives?
